c. 1850-1860's
While these dolls are mostly attributed to England, dolls of this type were also made in Germany. I believe this beautiful girl is one of the German made dolls. They tend to have rounder faces and a generally different look from the English dolls. In either case, she is in wonderful condition with none of the typical cracks that are found on the wax-over dolls. There are some small nicks in the wax and the tip of her nose is a bit work. She has dark glass eyes that open and close by a wire that protrudes from the side of her torso. Her brown human hair wig is inserted into a slit in the top of her head and it is styled in a typical 1850's style. She may be missing a few curls in the back, or they may have never been there due to a bonnet. She still has a nice, rosy complexion. She has a cloth body with white leather lower arms (age soiled). Her beautiful dress is all hand sewn. It's of pale yellow silk dress with lace trim and a tulle overlay and is nicely styled and possibly original. The color is almost like butter. There is a v-shaped accent on the front and back of the bodice that has little French knots embroidered on it. It closes with waxed string ties in the back. She has antique undergarments consisting of a polished cotton chemise and gauze pantalettes. Both of these are lace trimmed and show some wear. The gauze has broken down mostly on one leg due to the delicate nature of the fabric and I believe the acid from the sawdust stuffing reacts with the fabrics. She has old cotton stockings and red leather shoes which are a bit worn. I think her bonnet is a later addition, but it does match her dress. She is in sturdy condition but sometimes when she's moved a bit of sawdust will leak out – probably from where the eye wire exits. I have never completely undressed her – just peeked here and there – body seems to be all hand sewn and just a bit loose of stuffing. Nice condition after over 150 years, this great early doll is an asset to any collection. My shipping prices are estimates until the item is packaged and I have a destination.
