England, c. 1825-1850. Early wax dolls are my personal favorites. When they are original, as this one may be, they really give us a glimpse into hair, fashion and early doll making. She is completely handsewn. The clothing is also completely handsewn and is likely original to the doll. Clothing consists of pantaloons, 2 petticoats, a chemise, knit stockings and great red cloth and leather shoes. Her dress is nicely made with a fine red wool skirt and a dark moss green, lined velvet bodice with lace around the neck and sleeves. The dress has early brass hook and eye closures in the back. There are a few loose stitches where the bodice joins to the skirt. The body is cloth with finely made kid leather lower arms with nice fingers. The turned-in toes are typical for these dolls and are due to the early one or two piece body construction. The undergarments are sturdy, but have some age stains from the acid in the sawdust stuffing. The dress is in good condition, with just some minor moth damage on the skirt. The reds are bright with no fading. Her eyes are black glass and cheeks still have good color. Her lips have faded as happens often with these dolls. She has her original dark brown human hair wig with a center part and ringlets. Her face has some typical wear, mostly around the eye sockets where the wax has puckered as well as a nose rub. She has survived over 150 years remarkably well and has a great overall presence. US Shipping Only.
