During the Art Nouveau period of the late 1800's, a number of excellent porcelain factories in Europe, especially in the Germany, Austria and Bohemia regions produced some fantastic, as well as unique, decorative art objects.
This gorgeous vase, circa 1890's, is an great example of the craftsmanship of that era. The bulbous body of the vase is adorned with hand painted, shaded pink wild rose blossoms and blue poppy blossoms, both with additional unopened buds and nestled among shaded green, beige and faint gray foliage, outlined with gold, against a buttery yellow background. The gracefully tapered, reeded neck, flairs slightly at the top into a reticulated design. The handles are composed of curves, arches and embossed designs. Around the center of the vase is a reticulated band and at the base is a delicate embossed design. The neck, handles, central band and base is a beautiful lavender enamel generously adorned with gold highlights. The vase measures 11 3/4" in height, 6" across the widest portion of the body, 2 1/2" across the top and 3 1/2" across the base. It is stamped in red with a Crown, Star and Crescent with "Oxford", also impressed "591" and "2". Their are no cracks or repairs; one small 1/8" chip along the top edge on the backside of the vase (see photo). This could be easily repaired if wanted.
