The Weller Pottery Company was established in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1882, the outgrowth of a small one-kiln cabin works Sam Weller had operated in Fultonham. In 1895 the company entered the art pottery field. Through the years it grew into one of the largest potteries in the country and was home to many renowned designers and decorators. The depression brought a slow, steady decline in sales and in 1948 the pottery was closed.

The Weller Pottery Company was a big hit at the 1904 World's Fair. The fair, held in St. Louis, celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase. This souvenir plaque featuring President Ulysses S Grant was made and distributed free of charge. Other presidents featured were Washington, Lincoln, Jackson, T. Roosevelt, McKinley and Parker.

This unique piece of Weller pottery featuring President Ulysses S Grant is tinted a light blue color and is very hard to find. The plaque measures 4 3/8" across and is impressed "Weller" in block letters on the underside. There are no cracks, chips or repairs; any imperfections are from the firing/manufacturing process.
