The company of Lazarus Straus & Sons, New York, was founded in 1869 and successfully specialized on the import and resale of glass and ceramics. By 1874 they convinced R.H.Macy (Macy's) to allow shop-in-shop departments in their stores. The Lazarus Straus based New York and Rudolstadt Pottery Company, Inc. was founded in 1882.
This lovely and decorative vase has a bulbous base, sculptured neck and side handles. The soft beige bisque ground is very typical of English 19th century makers of similar wares. The base of the vase is decorated with transfer, multi-colored, morning glory blossoms on vines covered with olive green and brown foliage. The decoration is delicately outlined and highlighted with gold. The sculptured handles are white and gold. This could be normal wear, but appears to be intentional. The vase measures 11" in height, 6 1/2" across the widest portion and 2 3/4" across the base. Marked with the blue crown stamp and "Germany - RW - Rudolstadt", circa 1895-1924. Also in red "52". There are no cracks chips or repairs. Beautiful piece.
