Edward S. Challinor was probably the most notable of the Pickard Studio family of great artists. Edward was born in England in 1877 and began his apprenticeship in the family pottery at the age of seventeen. He married in 1899 and in 1903 left his wife and daughter to find employment in America. Joining Pickard in Chicago, his family soon joined him. He was not only a fine artist, but accomplished musician and a good actor. It is said he mixed his own colors, a secret he never shared with the other artists. He became a master of the china decorating medium, especially in his later pastel-colored scenics. This gorgeous cabinet plate in the "Garden Wall" scenic pattern, is executed with a soft vellum finish. It portrays a high tan stone wall overgrown with green foliage; pink and yellow flowering vines. Behind the wall are white, pink and yellow laden shrubs; flowering yellow and orange trees with taller grayish tree shilouettes in the background. Trailing the base of the wall are spikes of white floral. The sky shades from a soft white to pale lilac with the outer rim adorned with gold gilt.
The plate measures 8 3/4" and is stamped "Favorite Bavaria". The plates does not carry the Pickard Studio mark; perhaps it was part of a commissioned set in which all items were not marked Pickard or it may have been created by Challinor as a gift and thus not marked. There are no cracks, chips, or repairs; the gold is bright and colors vivid. A wonderful "Challinor' creation.
