In 1875, enterprising businessman James W. Tufts open up shop in Boston selling fine silver-plated tableware and elaborate silver soda fountains. The use of silver plate rather than pure sterling silver meant that more people could afford to buy these items.
This lovely, high quality silver plated bride's basket will be a delight to serve fruits, breads or pastries. The round slightly concave basket is decorated in the center with floral arrangement and geometric designed outer edge. The heavy wire handle is ornately hinged at the base and adorned with a wonderful finial. The collar base rests on four feet which incorporates both the floral and geometric designs. The basket measures 8 1/2" in height, 9 1/2" across the basket and 5 1/4" across the base. The piece is stamped "T" within a four-point star and "James W Tufts - Boston - Warranted - Quadruple Plate - 2706". There are no damages for missing parts; nice aged patina.
