Alfred Meakin Ltd was established in 1875 and operated from the Royal Albert, Victoria and Highgate Potteries in Tunstall. Alfred was the brother of James and George Meakin who ran a large pottery company in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. Alfred Meakin died in 1904 and was succeeded by his son Alfred James who died only four years later. Alfred James’s uncle Robert Johnson bought the company for his son Stuart Johnson and it stayed in the Johnson family’s hands until 1976 when it became Myott-Meakin before becoming part of the Churchill Group.

This wonderful, rare, coffee pot, circa 1890's, is the "Morning Glory" pattern. The transfer consists of morning glory blossoms, vines, birds and other flowers in shades of brown, gray, blue and red against the white blank with gold trim. Stamped in black with the double lion and crown mark, "Royal Ironstone China - Alfred Meakin - England", circa 1891-1897, as England was first added in 1891 and Ltd in 1898. The sugar bowl measures 8 1/4" from handle-to-spout, 4 1/2" in width and 8 3/4" in height. There are no cracks or repairs; normal crazing with crows foot on base; minor flake under spout and three flakes/chips under lid. Beautiful.
