Red Wing Pottery "Magnolia" Pattern - Bow Front Planter #1234Red Wing Pottery "Magnolia" Pattern - Bow Front Planter #1234

There was something in the rich limestone soil deposits found in Minnesota’s Goodhue County that was more than just a medium for local farmers to make utilitarian pottery pieces. What started as a cottage industry in the 1860s grew into one of the leading potting manufacturers in the United States before closing its doors in 1967. Having been in business for a century, Red Wing Pottery produced a prolific and varied catalog of products—literally something for every type of collector of American-made ceramics.

In 1940 Red Wing asked designer Belle Kogan to design a line similar to a previous popular Rum Rill line, called Pompeian. The new line, called Magnolia, was ornately decorated with magnolia blossoms in relief, The original twenty-four shapes came in Matt Ivory, Brown Antiqued Ivory, Green Antiqued Ivory and Oxblood. This lovely bow front planter is the brown antiqued ivory. The planter measures 14 1/8" in length, 4" in height, 3 7/8" in width and is very faintly stamped "1234 - Red Wing - USA" on the back-side. There are no cracks, chips or repairs.
