A gorgeous European, hand-carved mahogany picture frame, with floral motif, circa 1890-1920. Expertly carved in the Black Forest tradition, I feel this piece was created in France or perhaps Italy because of the type of wood used and the more romantic motif. The frame is actually three layers, the plaque portion, the outer frame and several back battens for support and stability. The plaque is adorned with deeply carved flowers, buds and leafage surrounding the central aperture. The outer frame is decorated with beautifully carved connecting arches.
The frame measures 10" by 12 1/4" in size and the center oval measures 3 3/8" by 4 5/8" in size. Rich mahogany color in wonderful condition with one minor chip on the outside edge of the frame (see photo).
