The Redon name is an old one in the Limoges o porcelain industry. Martial Redon was associated with Gibus from the 1850's until 1891. Redon gained control of the company in 1892 until his death in 1890. His son continued the business until 1896.
This is #1 from a set of 6 fabulous cabinet plates, each with a different scenic fishing motif. Manufactured and decorated in the Redon factory. The central scenic motifs showcase harbor scenes of various structures, tall mask fishing vessels, skies filled with fluffy clouds and placid waters with colorful fish swimming and jumping about. The transfer designs are a color pallet of pastel and vivid shades of blue, gray, tan, brown, russet and white with hand applied delicate gold outlines and highlights along with some colored enamels. The gently scalloped border is an elegant embossed shell design with encrusted gold.
The plate measures 9" across; stamped in red "M. Redon Limoges" within a circle, manufacturing mark, circa 1882-1896; in green M R over France, decorating mark, circa 1891-1896; and in red "4179". There are no cracks, chips or repairs; near mint. Beautiful plate; purchase the complete set of 6 for $475.
