Silhouette images have been poplar since the early 1800's to commemorate famous people or family members. During the period of 1920-1950 various companies introduced machine-made reverse painted silhouettes, many for use as promotional advertising items for a specific company with their name and contract information included as part of the design.
This gorgeous silhouette, circa 1940's, of a gracious Victorian lady is reverse hand painted on glass and signed by the artist. The subject, painted in black, shows a full length view of the lady with delicate lace over-skirt, sleeves, hair adornment and large fan. The background is pale tan patterned foil. It is framed in it's original wood, gold painted frame.
The silhouette, including frame, measures 7 5/8" in width and 9 1/2" in length. It is signed in the lower right-hand corner "Arlie" for Arlie Patterson, an artist who lived in Northern Illinois. There are condition issues.
