Joseph Clementson was born in 1794 and started working at potteries at the age of seventeen. He established the Phoenix Works in 1832, expanded in 1845 and purchased the Bell Works in 1856 before retiring from business in 1867.
This wonderful ironstone blue transfer-ware plate is the "Siam" pattern, circa 1850. It measures 8" across and is stamped with the Phoenix Bird mark, "Ironstone - Siam - J. Clementson"; impressed "Clementson - Shelton" and registry mark for 1850. There are no cracks, chips or repairs; moderate staining on the underside and very minor staining on front. Tape on the underside reads "My great grandma Betsy Winchell". Great piece of early blue transfer-ware.
