The "Posen" firm was founded in Frankfurt on the Main in 1869 by Brendina Wetzlar, the widow of Lazarus Jacob Posen, a silversmith and retailer of Polish descent. Under the widow Posen’s stewardship, the firm became the largest supplier of Judaica in the late 19th century. Her son Jacob L. Posen joined the firm by 1880, and by 1900, the company’s large staff of chasers and engravers were producing some of the finest silver in the country. They received a royal warrant in 1903 and opened a second shop in Berlin. In the 20th century the firm was under the direction of Brendina’s grandsons Jakob, Hermann and Moritz Posen. During this period the continental trends of Danish and Austrian styles were incorporated into their output. In 1938 the company was forcefully closed and looted on Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass - Novemberpogrome: courtesy information Jacob Frank).

This fabulous 5-piece coffee/tea service, circa 1920-1930, consists of a coffee pot, teapot, creamer, covered sugar bowl and serving tray. The Danish influence can be detected with the faceted, tapered, circular form and angular wood handles of the coffee pot, teapot, creamer and sugar bowl. The accompanying oval conforming tray features up-turned sides and wood loop handles. The serving tray measures 24 1/4" in length and the coffee pot measures 5 1/8" in height for comparison. The total weight of the set is approximately 122 ounces with an estimated silver content of 111 ounces. The tray is stamped with the marking shown in photo #8. while the other four pieces are stamped as shown in photo #9 and "61 over 1". There are no damages; minor scratches on underside of tray; light build-up of patina, which the new owner can easily polish to a brilliant glow.
