Osborne was the only Chicago china artist of any statue to use his first name for his studio, Anglicized from Asbjorn (Norwegian). His career started working for other decorators/wholesalers, until he opened his own studio in 1910. His most prolific years extended into the mid-1920's.
This wonderful, as well as unique, ash retriever is ball-shaped with two round openings and the top sculptured to hold two cigarettes. The piece is hand painted with California poppy blossoms and buds in rich red/orange shades, green and black accents and gold leaves against a black background. The interior, top and base is solid gold gilt. It is unmarked.
The ash retriever is 3 1/4" in size with no cracks, chips or repairs; near mint and perhaps never used. Stunning piece.
