Hand painted china is beautiful and unique as it portrays the artists emotions and visions for the subject he or she is creating. This beautiful hand painted cabinet plate, circa 1890, was created in a small home studio or professional studio environment by a very talented individual with great attention to detail and subject naturalism in variegated shades of Wedgwood blue.
The center of the plate portrays a sailing regatta fighting choppy seas with threatening clouds and seagulls flying overhead. The wide border of the gently scalloped and embossed Haviland blank is decorated with a garland of acanthus leaves.
The Haviland plate measures 8 1/4" across and is stamped in green "H & Co. over L over France", mark 'H' used 1888-1896. This plate carries the artist's initials "F E P" on the underside. There are no cracks, chips or repairs; near mint condition.
