Pilgrim Glass Company was founded in 1949 when Alfred Knobler purchased the failing Tri State Glass Manufacturing Company in Huntington, West Virginia. Knobler held a degree in ceramic engineering and had a flair for sales. In 1956, he built the last Pilgrim Glass production facility, located several miles away in Ceredo, West Virginia. The company closed in 2002.
The company made many types of glass during their time in existence. The best and least known from the early period of the company was their Mid-Century modern styles from the mid-1950's, created by brothers Alessandro and Roberto Moretti who emigrated from Italy, finding work with Pilgrim.
This fantastic, hand-blown vase consists of three layers of glass, a white base with clear glass overlay decorated with three strands of black glass. The vase measures 5" in height, 6 1/2" across with a 3/4" opening. One the side is the original silver, black and red foil label "Pilgrim Glass - Handmade - USA". There are no cracks, chips or repairs; near mint. It is gorgeous, rare and marked.
