Thomas Goodfellow II, Phoenix Works, Tunstall, Staffordshire Potteries, operated from 1828-1859.
This wonderful ironstone blue transfer-ware plate, circa 1840, is the 'Allegheny' pattern. The central motif features a romantic era river scene with a huge castle framed by rugged mountain peaks in the background. In the foreground is a lovely walled garden, tall trees, shrubs and ornamental urns. Walking along the river are two ladies, a man and his dog engaged in conversation. The twelve sided plate has a wide border decorated with five cartouches composed of picturesque lake scenes separated by floral rose arrangements.
The plate measures 9" across and is stamped with the company ribbon mark "Ironstone - Allegheny - T Goodfellow". There are no cracks, chips or repairs. Several indentations on the front happened during manufacturing and are glazed over (see photo).
