Charles Field Haviland started a small decorating studio in 1859. In 1870 a porcelain manufacturing company was established. Upon his retirement in 1881 the company was taken over by Gerard, Dufraisseis and Morel. The various Haviland companies sold undecorated white-ware to outside decorating companies and smaller studios.
This beautiful CFH/GDM Limoges hand painted leaf-shaped tray was executed in a home-studio environment by a skilled artist. The tray exhibits a central, gold trimmed cartouche, with the profile of a Victorian lady in a tall, wide brimmed, yellow hat, brown band and pink floral and ribbon tie. She is attired in a medium brown cape. The cartouche is surrounded by branches of variegated pink and white apple blossoms nestled among shaded green and brown leafage. The edge is delicately brushed with gold to accent the gold twig handle.
The nappy measures 8 1/2" in length, 7" in width and is stamped in green "CFH over GDM over France". This is mark C-3 which was used from 1882 - 1891, combined mark of Charles Field Haviland and Gerald, Dufraisseis & Morel. The artist's initials and date 'E.F.A. '93' appear on the underside of the tray. There are no cracks, chips or repairs. Great decorated early Haviland tray.
