Metzler & Ortloff of Ilmenau, Thuringia, Germany, a company that made art porcelain, was founded in 1875 by brothers Rudolf and Robert Metzler and their partner, Hugo Ortloff. The company made figurines, dolls' heads and parts, kitchen items, gift-ware, and other items. Much of its production was made for export. The company closed in 1972.
This wonderful figurine is that of an adult Penquin. Real-to-life depiction in naturalistic shades of black, gray, tan and white. The penquin measures 4 1/4" in height and is stamped with the Metzler & Ortloff mark used from 1890-1945 and impressed "7820". There are no cracks, chips or repairs. Unique subject.
