A lovely Japanese hand painted serving plate, circa 1930's, depicting a tranquil country scene of small, red roof cottage nestled among a grove of trees and surrounded on three sides by a quiet lake. The trees cast soft shadows on the water as a lone white swan swims slowly by. The earth tone landscape is framed by the soft blue shades of the lake and pink and blue sky on the horizon. The gold lustre border contains the delicate cut-in handles. The plate measures 9 1/4" across and 9 5/8" handle-to-handle. Stamped in black with the "Elephant" mark and "Made in Japan", the mark of Tashiro Shoten Ltd, Nagoya, with was in existence from about 1930 until 1954. Also have a celery/relish tray with five individual salt dips that has the same motif in my store, stamped "Made in Japan".
