The Pouyat family was one of the oldest French families connected with the Limoges porcelain industry. Jean Pouyat's grandfather has a faience factory in the 1760's.
This beautiful hand painted cabinet plate was expertly executed in a factory decorating studio, probably JPL. The unusual and unique motif is composed of three groups of four wild mushrooms in natural shades of variegated browns and grays among sprigs of shaded green fauna. The border is a soft pastel green spatter pattern accented by a decorative gold edging outlined in black.
The plate measures 8 1/2" across and carries mark #5 in green "J P over L over France" circa 1894-1931, designating the Jean Pouyat Limoges Company, and in red "C 3423". On the front is the artist signature "Emile", which could be that of the famous French artist Emile Pouyat or is attributed to one of his originals. There are no cracks, chips or repairs. Gorgeous piece of art.
