A beautiful religious oil painting depicting a mother holding her young child, circa 1880. The mother is attired in a burgundy, long sleeve gown, delicate white scarf around the neckline and long medium blue cape. Her face reflects a seriousness of the occasion and her deep, caring love for her young child. The child is sitting on a brown, cloth covered table somewhat to the left of center of her mother, wearing a long sleeve white gown with simple round neck opening and tiny bare feet protruding out the bottom. The child's daring, chubby face is framed by short blond hair. In the child's right hand is a small cross while the up-raised left hand holds a delicate Rosary. The background is composed of soft, mottled shades of yellow and tan.
The painting is presented on a 1/4" thick wood panel, containing numerous worm on insect holes inflected years before. It likely is a panel from a small piece of furniture being re-purposed for this worthy cause. The panel measures 6 3/8" in width, 7 5/8" in length and the painting is in excellent condition with only several paint chips along the outer edge. Unfortunately the artist forgot to sign and date this timeless treasure.
