Nippon generally refers to Japanese wares made during the period of 1891 to 1921. Nippon, meaning Japan, identified the country of origin to comply with American importation restrictions.
This lovely hand painted Nippon, kidney shaped, divided serving/relish dish is decorated with pairs of blue birds encased in encrusted gold cartouches and connected by gold scrolls and floral creating a continuous garland surrounding the piece against the white porcelain blank. The item is further adorned with gold bands, handle and trim. The kidney shaped dish measures 8" by 7" by 1" in depth, not including the handle. Marked in green with the Nippon #47 mark, consisting of an "M" within a wreath and "Hand Painted Nippon". The M stands for the importer, Morimura Bros. There are no cracks, chips or repairs.
