Nippon generally refers to Japanese wares made during the period of 1891 to 1921. Nippon, meaning Japan, identified the country of origin to comply with American importation restrictions.
This gorgeous hand painted Nippon vase is decorated on the front and back with large cartouches of variegated pink/white blossoms, soft green, fern-like leaves against a muted blue to peach background. On the shoulders of the vase are clusters of yellow rose blossoms nestled among blue/green foliage. The body of the vase is decorated with geometric areas of pastel aqua, blue and peach outlined with narrow gold, beaded bands. The arched handles, ruffled top and sculptured base is also decorated with gold. The vase measures 8 1/2" in height, 6" from handle-to-handle, 3" across the top and 4" across the base. The vase is marked in green with the Nippon #47 mark, consisting of an "M" within a wreath and "Hand Painted Nippon". The M stands for the importer, Morimura Bros. There are no cracks, chips or repairs; some minor gold wear on top and handles. Fantastic design and color pallet.
