Nippon generally refers to Japanese wares made during the period of 1891 - 1921. Nippon, meaning Japan, identified the country of origin to comply with American importation restrictions.
This gorgeous miniature compote with handles is decorated with an array of Art Nouveau designs of lotus blossoms, stylized birds and hearts. The color pallet of pastel blue, cherry red, tan, yellow and white designs outlined with black is lovely. The interior band, compote rim and base edge is decorated with delicate gold bead-work; the handles are also covered with gold enamel. The piece measures 4 1/4" across the center, 5" across the handles and 2 1/2" in height. It is stamped in red and green "Hand Painted RC Nippon. This mark was used by Royal Crockery (fine china) from 1911-1921. There are no cracks, chips or repairs. Breathtaking workmanship and design.
