Joseph Clementson was born in 1794 and started working at potteries at the age of seventeen. He established the Phoenix Works in 1832, expanded in 1845 and purchased the Bell Works in 1856 before retiring from business in 1867.
This wonderful ironstone blue transfer-ware covered sugar bowl is the Hyson pattern, which consists of oriental pagodas and gardens scenery, scroll designs and floral arrangements. The bowl carries it's octagon shape from the base through to the beautiful finial on the lid. The piece measures 7 1/4" in height to the top of the finial. Stamped 'Ironstone", the Phoenix Bird mark, "Hyson - J Clementson"; this mark was first used in 1840. There are no cracks, chips or repairs. A wonderful piece of early blue transfer-ware.
