This is a RARE figurine entitled 'Hans Clodhopper', pattern #1070, produced by the Dahl Jensen Porcelain Company. Dahl Jensen (1874 - 1960) began his career with Bing and Grondahl in 1897 where he worked for 25 years. In 1925 he started his own factory in Copenhagen, Denmark. His company became a family company and produced porcelains until 1981. After selling off all the remaining stock, the factory closed in 1984.
The figurine, designed by Poul Lemser, portrays a happy, smiling faced, Hans Clodhopper riding a goat and holding a wild game bird in his left hand while hanging on to one of the goat's large curved horns with his right. Hans is clad in knee-length pants with long socks, vest, neck scarf, waist coat and hat, in earthy shades of blue, gray, brown and red. The light gray goat has grayish-brown hooves, horns, ears, eyes and mouth. The figure rests on a white oval base covered with mottled tan and blue-gray foliage. The character Hans Clodhopper is from the Danish fairy-tale entitled 'Jack Dullard' by Hans Christian Anderson. The base measures 4 1/8" in length, 2 3/4" in width and the figure measures 8 3/4" in height. Stamped with a Crown "D J - Copenhagen - Denmark - 1070"; initials of decorator "FK" and impressed "PL" for Poul Lemser designer. There are no cracks, chips or repairs. Great piece of Dahl Jensen Porcelain.
