This fantastic figurine of a Faun with a goat is pattern #498. The legs, tail and hair of the Faun is a rich gray with tan highlights, while the remainder of his body a pale flesh tone. The faun is seated on a soft, green-gray, grassy mound facing a young, white goat, eye-to-eye, as the goat climbs upon the leg of the faun. The figurine measures 5" in height and rests on a round base measuring 4 1/8' across. The base is surrounded by a pastel gray, interwoven, looping ribbon design. The top of the base is incised 'Chr' for Christian Thomsen. Stamped in green with the Crown and "Royal Copenhagen Denmark" over three cobalt blue wavy lines and the initials of the decorator. The 'h' in Copenhagen is underlined, indicating the piece was made in 1967. There are no cracks, chips or repairs; mint condition and scarce.
The piece was originally sculptured in 1906 by Christian Thomsen (1860-1921), who was employed by the Royal Copenhagen Company from 1898 until his death in 1921. He modeled over 100 figurines in addition to numerous vases and over 36 Christmas and Commemorative Plaques during his career with Royal Copenhagen.
The Faun is a half-human, half-goat (a man with a goat's ears, tail, legs and horns) manifestation of forest and animal spirits that would help or hinder humans at whim. They are often associated with the Satyrs in Greek Mythology
