Founded in 1775 by Frantz Heinrich Muller (1738-1820), the Royal Danish Porcelain Manufactory, later became Royal Copenhagen. For over two centuries, Royal Copenhagen has supplied homes in Denmark and Internationally with art and design of the highest quality.
This fantastic figurine of a Faun with a squirrel is pattern #456. The legs, tail and hair of the Faun is a pleasing medium gray with tan highlights, while the remainder of his body a pale flesh tone. A delightful figure featuring the faun atop a pedestal with flute in hand, gazing down as his music entertains the snow-white squirrel below. The reeded column is white and pastel gray with a tan garland with blue-gray floral surrounding the square base. The figurine measures 8 1/2" in height with the base measuring 3 1/2"" by 3 1/2" in size. Stamped in green with the Crown and "Royal Copenhagen Denmark" over three cobalt blue wavy lines and the initials of the decorator. The 'e' in Denmark is underlined, indicating the piece was made in 1956. There are no cracks, chips or repairs; mint condition and scarce.
The piece was originally sculptured in 1903 by Christian Thomsen (1860-1921), who was employed by the Royal Copenhagen Company from 1898 until his death in 1921. He modeled over 100 figurines in addition to numerous vases and over 36 Christmas and Commemorative Plaques during his career with Royal Copenhagen.
The Faun is a half-human, half-goat (a man with a goat's ears, tail, legs and horns) manifestation of forest and animal spirits that would help or hinder humans at whim. They are often associated with the Satyrs in Greek Mythology
