Karl Schatz, a German silversmith from the late 1800's through the first quarter of the 1900's, created this gorgeous '800 silver' basket. Utilizing an old world floral design, Schatz incorporated the repousse technique on the body of the basket, chased technique on the handle and the arts & crafts hand hammered technique on the bottom of the basket, circa 1900-1915. The basket measures 5 1/4" in length, 3 3/4" in width and 3 3/4" in height to the top of the handle. It is stamped "KS 800" on the base and weighs 2.465 ounces. There are no cracks, dents or repairs; wonderful original patina.
In 1884 a law was enacted making .800 the minimum national standard for silver in Germany.
