An American, David Haviland, was an importer of French and English porcelains during the early to mid-1800's. In 1849 he moved his family to Limoges, France, to begin he own porcelain manufacturing and decorating factory and as a result, Haviland China was born. Upon his death in 1879, his two sons split the company. Charles formed Haviland & Co., while Theodore formed Theodore Haviland, which produced these items.
This lovely set of 6 cup & saucers are on the Schleiger #116 White Blank. The motif consists of clusters and singles of large powder blue and soft pink variegated blossoms and buds suspended from brown branches covered with shaded brown and light green foliage. The flowers resemble the poppy or peony families. The outer edge is dabbed with gold gilt. The saucers measure 5 3/4" across; the cups measure 2 1/4" in height and 3 7/8" across, which is the larger size. They are stamped in green with the mark 'K', 'Mont-Mery' Castles mark, used in 1892 and the decorator mark 'Set Saint Cloud - Patent Applied For". They are also stamped in red 'Manufactured by Theodore Haviland for Burley & Company Chicago', who was a major importer and wholesaler during this time period. There are no cracks, chips or repairs, with the exception of a small rim flake on one saucer. Other items of this pattern are in my store.
