Nippon generally refers to Japanese wares made during the period of 1891 - 1921. Nippon, meaning Japan, identified the country of origin to comply with American importation restrictions.
This gorgeous miniature compote with handles is decorated with cobalt blue and heavy encrusted gold designs and trim. The interior of the bowl has four oval cartouches, with two different delicately painted scenes; one depicting a swan floating on a placid lake and the other with picturesque hills and stream. The scenes are surrounded with enamel turquoise beads and the center of the bowl has a gold medallion and tracery with additional pink beads. The piece measures 4 1/4" across the center, 5" across the handles and 2 3/8" in height. It is stamped in green with the Maple Leaf mark and "Hand Painted Nippon". This mark was used by the Morimura Bros. from 1891-1911. There are no cracks, chips or repairs. Breathtaking workmanship and design.
