Lovely vintage sterling silver match box holder, circa 1940's-1950's, with engraved rampant lion design. The front of the box is engraved with a sejant rampant lion also called the sejant erect lion, which is typically seen in Scottish heraldry. The lion is a common charge in heraldry and traditionally symbolizes bravery, valor, strength and royalty.
The box measures 1 3/4" in length, 1 1/8" in width and 1/2" in thickness. The spine is stamped "Sterling". It still contains a complete box of matches, the cover of which is marked "Jack Nadel Inc - JNI - Oleander 5-8234 - Los Angeles". The matchbox is in very good condition with some surface scratches and original patina.
