Jacob H. Stouffer was born in Adeline, Illinois. He opened his decorating studio in Chicago in 1905 which continued until 1952. The high period of Stouffer hand painted china appears to have spanned the years from 1905 to 1925. During this time the company employed some of the best decorators of that era.
This lovely hand painted relish dish, circa 1906-1914, is decorated in a beautiful apple blossom floral motif. The bunches of pastel pink blossoms with shaded yellow centers are nestled among medium green and tan leaves on dark brown branches. The design is delicately outlined and highlighted with gold. The background shades from a white center to a lovely shaded medium blue border. A gold band around the side and gold decorative border completes this gorgeous picture. The relish measures 7 1/4" in length, 4 5/8" in width and 1 3/8" in height. It is artist signed. The base is stamped in green "A K D France" for Klingenberg & Dwenger Co, circa 1890-1910, and the Stouffer mark #4 in red "Hand Stouffer Painted". There are no cracks, chips or repairs. The decorating is stunning.
