This is a lovely set of 3 Kutani porcelain plates, circa 1885, from the late Meiji period which ran from 1868-1913.
The plates are profusely decorated with hand-painted images of a pair of swallows, chrysanthemum blossoms and other delicate foliage all done in a pallet of soft reds, pinks, grays, tans, yellow and black against the white porcelain background. Most of the decoration is outlined and highlighted with gold. The red borders are decorated with a delicate gold Japanese design.
The plates measure 8 1/2" across and are unmarked on the base. There are no cracks, chips or repairs; some gold wear on the borders. A wonderful set of plates for special use or decor.
