This lovely set of 6 bread & butter/ dessert plates are hand painted with European Gooseberry motif. A long brown stem holds three green ribbed gooseberries which are nestled among shaded green and gray leaves with tings of brown. The white blank has muted pink highlights and narrow gold edge. Each plate is artist signed "Arnott".
The plates measure 5 7/8" across and are stamped with a crown and "Imperial Crown China Austria. Nine are marked in script "Art Studio Hand Painted", and the other three are marked in gold script "Hand Painted". This ‘Imperial Crown China, Austria' backstamp was the mark of a decorator and importer, not a manufacturer. It was the mark of Bawo and Dotter who basically decorated blanks at their studio in Fischern which was then in a region known as Bohemia. Their main office was in New York and they also had a decorating plant in Limoges. They were founded in 1883 and continued until 1914. There are no cracks, chips or repairs; a lovely, pleasing motif.
