A beautiful Vienna style portrait plate, circa 1900, from Austria. The portrait, entitled "Constance" is that of a beautiful young woman with long flowing brunette hair, gorgeous rosy completion, dark eyes and ruby-red lips, attired in a low-cut, white gown with red highlights, set against a shaded red, yellow and olive background. The decorating technique used was transfer with hand-painted highlights. The wide border is richly decorated in burgundy, emerald green, white and gold gilt in a combination of panels, shields, wreaths, floral, laurel ribbon, geometric designs and tracery. The plate is stamped with the 'Beehive' mark over 'Austria'; hand numbered '24D over g3' and stamped with a Winged Lion over 'L S S Carlsbad Austria' the mark for Lewis Straus & Sons, used from 1891-1917. Lewis Straus & Sons (LS&S) was founded in New York City in 1869, as importers of crockery; in 1924 it became Nathan Straus & Co, and in the 1930's it closed. The plate measures 8 1/2" across; there are no cracks or repairs; a small flake on the edge has been touched up at some time, this could easily be professionally repaired if desired. (see photo). Priced accordingly.
