Charles Field Haviland started a small decorating studio in 1859. In 1870 a porcelain manufacturing company was established. Upon his retirement in 1881 the company was taken over by Gerard, Dufraisseix and Morel. The various Haviland companies sold undecorated white-ware to outside decorating companies and smaller studios.
This pair of lovely CFH/GDM Limoges hand painted plates were executed in a home-studio environment by a skilled artist. Each plate exhibits a different variety of orchid plant in a naturalistic setting of beautiful blossoms, buds and long slender foliage against the white background. The coup-style plates measure 7 1/2" across with delicate scalloped edge trimmed with gold gilt.
Each plate is stamped in green "CFH over GDM over France". This is mark C-4 which was used from 1891 - 1900. Both are initialed and dated by the artist "S C '92". There are no cracks, chips or repairs. Great pair of early Haviland plates.
