Although this beautiful talc/sugar shaker/muffineer is unmarked, I am sure it is from the R S Germany Companies. The "RS" is derived from its founder Reinhold Schlegelmilch, but it was the work of his sons that made the mark famous. With factories in Suhl and Tillowitz the majority of their production was exported from 1892 until the beginning of WW II.
A muffineer is essentially a salt shaker; it's a small container with a perforated top which is used to shake out powders like sugar, salt, and talc in a controlled way. The word “muffineer” started to be used in the early 1800s to describe a shaker used to hold powdered sugar or sugar & cinnamon which could be spread on toast, muffins, scones, and other breakfast goods.
This lovely shaker, circa 1910-1920, it is decorated with white/pink California poppy blossoms on long stems and leaves in shaded green/gray hues, against a background of white with soft yellow, blue, green and pink highlights. The rim is edged with gold gilt. The piece measures 6 1/4" in height and has the original cork stopper. It is marked in blue "Germany" and in gold "Handpainted" which refers to the gold trim as the decoration is a transfer. There are no cracks, chips or repairs. Great piece.
