Nippon generally refers to Japanese wares made during the period of 1891 to 1921. Nippon, meaning Japan, identified the country of origin to comply with American importation restrictions.
This lovely Art Deco inspired set consists of a covered jam jar with slot for serving spoon and under-plate. The white porcelain blanks are hand decorated with bands of individual stylized rose blossoms in colors of shaded pink and yellow with surrounding green leaves, all features are edged in black. The plate, jar and lid each have a border of medium blue with cobalt scrolls outlined in gold gilt. The edges, handles and finial are also decorated with gold. The jam jar with lid measures 5 1/2" in height and the under-plate measures 5 7/8" across. The jam jar is marked in green with the Nippon #47 mark, consisting of an "M" within a wreath and "Hand Painted Nippon". The M stands for the importer, Morimura Bros. The under-plate is unmarked.
