In 1883 two brothers, Alfred and Frederick Johnson, purchased a defunct pottery known as Charles Street Works in Hanley, England. By the end of the 1890's Johnson Brothers may have been the largest earthenware manufacturer in the world. Noted for their early introduction of 'Semi-Porcelain', about 1889, which had the characteristics of fine china but the durability of ironstone.

This lovely sugar bowl & creamer set is the "Winchester" pattern, produced from 1950 - 1986. The pattern is a collage of floral specimens, including tulips and roses, in predominate shades of light to dark rose/pink with some interspersed blue and yellow. Accented green leaves and scrolls complete the picture. The pieces are decorated with an embossed rope design edge. The sugar bowl measures 6 1/2" from handle-to-handle and 3 1/2" in height; the creamer measures 5" from spout-to-handle and 3 3/4" in height; both pieces are stamped "Winchester - a Crown - Johnson Bros - England". There are no cracks, chips or repairs. I have more items of this pattern in my store
