Whiting & Davis Co. began as a chain manufacturing company in 1876 by William Wade and Edward P. Davis. In 1907 C.W. Whiting became the new owner. The company became famous for their mesh metal handbags but also made accessories and costume jewelry. It's believed that the jewelry line began in the 1950's. They are still in business today making metal mesh but stopped the jewelry lines in 1991.
Within the jewelry line, they were famous for their crystal and hematite cameos. This lovely necklace, circa 1950's, contains a stunning crystal reverse intaglio cut cameo with the profile image of a beautiful young woman. The oval cameo measures 1 1/2" in length and is mounted in a gold-tone filigree frame which measures 2 1/4" in length and 1 7/8" in width. Attached to an 18" linked chain with embossed box closure. It is marked "Whiting - Davis" within an oval hang tag attached at the closing mechanism. Excellent condition with no damages. If you like cameos, you will love this item.
