The Trifari Jewelry Company was created in 1918 by Gustavo Trifari who had immigrated to this country from Italy in 1904 and founded Trifari NYC in 1910. Considered one of the largest and best known producers of costume jewelry, producing he highest quality and styles from imaginative sterling vermeil figurals of the 1940's to its classic gold and silver-tone styles.
This wonderful 'Butterfly' brooch, circa 1940's, is sterling silver with gold vermeil overlay. Diamond pave rhinestones decorate the body and tips of the wings. The wings are each adorned with a prong-set ruby and blue sapphire glass cabochon. The design patent was granted in 1944. The brooch measures 1 1/2" in length, 1 1/4" in width with a safety clasp mechanism. The wings are stamped "Trifari" with a crown over the T; "Sterling" and "des pat no 138520". Great vintage condition with normal vermeil wear and original aged patina finish; all sets are bright. A super sterling Trifari creation.
