This is a wonderful matching pair of figural bird brooches, circa 1940-1950, by one of the great costume jewelry manufactures of the era. unfortunately they are not marked as to the maker.
The birds, I think are woodpeckers because of their long pointed beaks and feather topknot on the heads. The body is a pear-shape, foiled, peridot rhinestone mounted open-back. The head, wings and branch upon which they are sitting, is decorated with various size round and baguette diamond rhinestones. The eye is a round tourmaline rhinestone. Each measures 1 3/4" in length, 1" in width and has a safety clasp mechanism. There are no damages and the sets are very bright. A rather unusual and scarce pair of smaller size brooches.
