Renoir was best known for their uniquely shaped solid copper jewelry. Founded in Los Angeles, California in 1946 by Jerry Fels; from the outset he took the company in the direction of contemporary abstract designs. Recreating the look of hand-hammered copper as their material of choice, Renoir has always made a change from the more typical costume jewelry using rhinestones as the key material. The Fels family also founded Matisse, Ltd. Matisse also created fine copper jewelry but added enamel decoration to the surface, taking the jewelry in new directions. Both Renoir and Matisse ceased ongoing operations in 1964.

This elegant and unusual designed brooch is in the shape of a theatrical mask. Enameled black on one side and a golden tan with silver mica flecks on the other; further adorned with copper wire and spheres. The brooch measures 2 1/2" in length, 1" in width with a safety clasp mechanism. It is stamped "Matisse" in script. Near mint condition. Wonderful piece.
