The tradition wisdom is that between the years of 1890 and 1920, all Chinese items that were manufactured to be exported in to the US was required to me marked with the word 'China'. The designation 'Made In China' would come later.
This lovely tea set, circa 1900, is decorated with a collage of peonies, chrysanthemums and other varieties in shades of orange, blue, yellow and purple with green foliage, all of which is outlined in gold. The set consists of a tea pot, 5 3/4" in height and 8 1/2" from spout-to-handle; oval recessed tray, 11" in length and 9 3/4" in width; four tea cups, 2 1/4" in height and 2 7/8" across the top. The tea pot and cups are stamped, in red, with a factory stamp and also 'China'; the tray is only stamped 'China'. There are no cracks, chips or repairs. Very colorful set.
