This lovely transfer decorated cabinet plate, circa 1920, consists of orange poppies with large shaded green leaves in the background with smaller leaves circling the plate against the white porcelain blank. The edge is trimmed with a wide band of gold and the plate is signed "Machaon" designating the original artist.
The plate measures 8 1/2" across and is stamped on double ribbons "Bavarian China & Hand Painted" and the back-stamp of a crown, laurel leaves surrounding a crest and the initials P.T. Bavaria. This denotes the Tirschenreuther Porcelain Factory, operational from 1838-1927, when it was taken over by the Hutschereuther company. Transfer decorated porcelain items were many times marked 'hand painted' because the gold trim and sometimes enamel highlights were hand applied. There are no cracks, chips or repairs. Lovely.
