Antique Union Case w/Daguerrotype of Victorian Gentleman
The daguerrotype of photography first appeared in 1839, reached their peak from 1842-1858 and were waning by 1862. The process was a photograph on silver-covered copper, so they looked mirrored at certain angles.
The earlier Union Cases, as this case is, were constructed of wood and covered with leather. The motif of this case, on both sides, is a central cartouche containing a floral display, surrounded by geometric swirls, scrolls and plumes. The case closes with one hook. The inside has a red velvet liner with a scroll design and a very ornate brass frame. The case in in wonderful condition with no breaks and some minor wear.
The daguerrotype is a 1/6 plate size, with the glass print measuring about 2 3/4" x 3 1/4". The case measures about 3 1/8" x 3 5/8". The daguerrotype is of a Victorian Gentlemen dressed in full formal wear of the period, circa early 1850's. The image is very good with blurring near the brass frame. Wonderful case and photo.
