Wood & Challinor, Brownhills Pottery, 1828-1841, Woodland Pottery, 1828-1843, Tunstall, Staffordshire. The pattern name is "Patras" taken from the name of the Gulf of Patras in Greece.

The blue and white transfer consists of a central garden scene with winding steps leading to a large gazebo with trees, buildings and statuary in the background. People are shown in the foreground and climbing the steps. Around the wide rim are three cartouches containing scenes, surrounded and separated by a mosaic background, scrolls and garlands.

The regular dodecagon-shaped plate measures 8 1/4" across. The back-stamp reads "Ironstone - Patras - W & CH". There are no cracks, chips or repairs; minor utensil marks. Great piece of early blue transfer-ware.
